A special place is occupied by the ratio of chronic pain and depression. Chronic pain, especially psychogenic character, often included in the picture of psychopathological depressive syndrome, often as part of neurotic disorders. It is very relevant in clinical practice is the problem of masked depression, chronic pain which serves one of the masks of depression, leading these patients are more likely to therapists and neurologists than psychiatrists. When the existence of different views about the close relationship of chronic pain and depression are the most accepted notions of common neurochemical mechanisms of these two phenomena. It is a monoaminergic systems with the dominant role of serotonergic mechanisms. the latter deficiency can serve as a common basis for the formation of chronic algic and depressive symptoms. This provision has been confirmed by the positive results of the treatment of chronic pain with antidepressants, the mechanism of which is the inhibition of serotonin reuptake (tricyclic antidepressants, serotonin reuptake inhibitors). In addition, it should be noted that pain can occur secondary patient suffering from depression, and vice versa, depressive disorders are often formed in patients with chronic pain.
