Odaenathus, beating the Persians drove them to the Ctesiphon. In gratitude, the Romans proclaimed him emperor of the East, and princeps Palmyra. In addition, Odaenathus was declared commander of all Roman legions in Asia. Thus Odaenathus received a surge of power over Syria, Arabia and even Armenia. Palmyra became the first city in Asia, capital of the Middle East. In 266, the Odaenathus won another victory over the Persians. Soon, however, at the instigation of Rome, who feared his influence increased too, princeps Palmyra was killed in Emese in 266 or 267
