The son of German Emperor Otto III Theophanu combined the ambitions of their ancestors crowned in the male line with the romantic mysticism, inherited from his mother. He dreamed of the great Byzantine recension theocracy that would bring together under its shadow of the Germans and the Greeks, Italians and Slavs. At its head stood to God, and he and the Pope - in that order - were the least of his lieutenants. Was it possible to find a better base for the realization of this dream than a marriage between the two empires? As an emissary to perform such a delicate mission Otto chose John Filagata Archbishop Pyachentskogo, Calabrian Greek who was the chaplain of his mother and her close friend.
