The Soviet armed forces were under the two people selected personally by Stalin. One of them was an old Bolshevik J. C. Berzin, who led before the Soviet military intelligence. Another emissary of Stalin was Staszewski, the Soviet Communist of Polish origin, officially served as trade representative in Barcelona. Berzin, does not have great leadership talent, nevertheless he played a leading role in organizing the defense of Madrid in the end of 1936. He made a significant contribution to the formation of a modern regular army of undisciplined and uncoordinated Spanish armed forces.
