Bowes arrived in Moscow on October 15 and was adopted by the king ten days later. Subsequent negotiations were far from smooth. Queen Elizabeth's instructions have been agreed in the negotiations with Pisemsky. The main objective was to ensure Elizabeth English merchants a monopoly on the use of the Arctic sea route to Muscovy, and as many other privileges. The Queen wished to avoid certain obligations with respect to the king in his fight against Poland, as well as cool it marriage plans. Bowes task ahead was, of course, difficult. He had failed in business, tactless and peremptorily conversing with the king and his advisers. The talks ended February 20, 1584, 391 which was followed by preparation for departure to England Bowes.
