Thus, in the second half of May, the authorities in the country in fact passed into the hands of new "voennyh- politicians" led by Chung Duhvanom. Against such a position with arms made by the students and the citizens of the largest center of the south-west of the country - the city of Gwangju, marching on the streets even before the announcement of "expansion" of the state of emergency on 17 May. New demonstrations calling for the abolition of the state of emergency began at 8 am May 18 at the main gate of the University campus [province] South Jeolla (Chonnamde). Already about 10 o'clock in the morning on the streets of the city began the first clashes between demonstrators and the army special forces. The next day, May 19, when it became known that the clashes of the previous day led to numerous victims among the civilian population, on the central streets of the city went out, not only students, but also the citizens. On the same day in Gwangju were transferred chetyrebatalona special units of government troops. May 20 demonstrators were joined by drivers of buses and taxis blocked traffic on the main street Kymnamno.
