By the morning of December 29, Soviet troops hit from several directions defeated the German garrison in Kotelnikovo and liberated the city. Remains of Romanian and German troops hastily retreated to the west and south-west. Part of the forces of the 2nd Guards Army December 29 crossed from Upper Kurmoyarskoy on the right bank of the Don and together with units of the 5th Shock Army led offensive against Tormosin. The German command began a hasty withdrawal of its troops from the region and Tormosin.
