Ivan IV was afraid to announce a new institute - the oprichnina - in Moscow, where such a coup attempt could be prevented by existing institution ruling boyars, nobles and clerks. So he decided to temporarily leave the capital and to retire to the place where he will be better protected by their bodyguards - "gang of Satan," as they referred to Kurbskiy.251 December 3, 1564 the king and his family left Moscow and went to Kolomenskoye village south of the city, and from there moved to prayer to the Trinity Monastery. But it was not the usual pilgrimage. The king ordered a select group of boyars, the nobility, the boyars' sons and clerks, in whose loyalty he had no doubt, to accompany him. He also ordered the detachment of the provincial nobility and the boyars' sons follow him into battle order. Among what he took with him were the royal treasury, icons, jewelry and clothing.
