As I will discuss in Chapters 4 and 5, assemblers and intelligent machines will simplify many of the problems associated with the timing and the cost of technological developments. But questions of time and cost will still be looming in our field of vision during the period between the present day and these breakthroughs. Richard Feynman saw in 1959 that nanomachines could direct chemical synthesis, possibly including DNA synthesis. However, he could not foresee any deadlines or the cost of doing this.
