During the thirty years that separate from each other texts cited Rybakov, the study of the Khazar Khanate (mainly archaeological) has made it impossible simply an understatement of its size and power. Thus, the fundamental archaeological treatise SA Pletnev, published in 1967, was completed entirely justified conclusion that the Khazar Khanate was a "powerful nation", which managed "for almost two centuries to confront the biggest states of the time - the Byzantine Empire and the Arab Caliphate"  (here you need a clarification: "confrontation" Kaganate Arabs and Byzantium refers to different times: the first - to the VII-VIII, and the second - to the IX-X centuries).
