The principles of evolution provide a way to consider the change, whether in molecules, organisms, technologies, minds and cultures. Get up the same basic questions: What is the replicators? How do they differ? What determines their success? As they are protected against the invaders? These questions arise again when we consider the consequences of the assembler revolution, and again, when we consider how society might deal with its consequences. The principles of evolutionary change, with deep roots, will shape the development of nanotechnology, even when the difference between computer hardware and life begins to wear off. These principles reveal a lot about what we can and can not hope to achieve, and they can help us to focus our efforts to shape our future. They also tell us a lot about what we can and can not predict, because they control the evolution of not only material, but also the evolution of knowledge.
