And yet, despite all the difficulties, in 1762 he published the first report on the discoveries at Herculaneum. Two years later, he again visited the city and the museum and published a second report. In both the reports he referred to the information gleaned from them the stories of Father; both contained a sharp criticism. When his second report came in a French translation to the court of Naples, the whole storm of indignation went up there: the German, who was given a rare mercy - because he was allowed to view the museum, - repaid a coin for it! Of course, Winckelmann attacks were fair, and its anger - not unreasonable. However, for us it is of no importance. The main value of the reports was the fact that they clearly and for the first time in a business described begun excavations at the foot of Mount Vesuvius.
