If you put aside the fact that it seems redundant systems made from surplus, flawless components can often be made almost perfectly reliable. Redundant systems, distributed on a fairly wide range even withstand bullets and bombs. But what about design errors? The presence of a dozen redundant parts will not give any benefit if they share a common critical mistake in the design. A variety of designs - one answer; good test - another. We can safely develop good designs without being good at grade designers: we just need to be good to test, fix bugs, and be patient. Nature has developed a working molecular machinery through entirely headless repair and testing. With the mind, we can do no better or worse.
