Third Macedonian War After the victory over Antiochus the Macedonian issue was the main concern of the Senate. The complexity of the problem was that Philip had Rome great services in the struggle against Antiochus. Therefore, it was a simple act of gratitude that the Romans allowed him to profit at the expense of the Aetolian League. But Philip did not stop there. He took possession of Demetrias and a large number of cities in Thessaly, captured some of the items on the Thracian coast, and so on. Such amplification Macedonia threatened to Roman hegemony in Greece, so the Senate began to take its countermeasures. In 189, he made peace with the Aetolians at relatively mild conditions, wanting to keep the Aetolian League as a counterweight to Macedonia. Six years later, based on the complaint and the Greek Eumenes Philip enemies, the Romans forced him to clean the Thracian cities and some points in Greece. Although this has been achieved through diplomacy, but the relationship soured so that it almost came to war. Philip had to be sent to Rome an extraordinary embassy headed by his younger son Demetrius. Embassy reassured the Senate, which is patronized Demetrius, wanting to see him as a successor to Philip and seeking to draw him into the orbit of Roman influence (Demetri previously spent several years in Rome hostage). But the king was the rightful heir to his eldest son Perseus. Senate Policy had resulted only quarrel in the royal family and the execution of Demetrius (181 g.) Energetic Philip, for whom the way to Greece were once again closed, has developed another plan:. he decided to gain a foothold in the mainland of Thrace. After several successful wars, Philip made a significant impact and there is an alliance with the tribe Bastarnae who lived on the other side of the Danube. The future plans of the Macedonian king was to knock out the barbarians to attack on Italy, and the most at this time once again to subdue Greece. But this broad plan was destined to fail, as in 179, Philip died, leaving, however, Perseus strong militarily and relatively well-organized state.
