Part two CORTES Chapter 1 PRELUDE TO Conquista Cortes sailed to the country, later called New Spain, February 10, 1519. He was then thirty-three and fifteen years, nearly half of his life he spent in the Indies. He served as a notary, secretary-treasurer of Velasquez, senior civil servants, did business in the rapidly growing capital of the colony, and until that time it seemed quite satisfied with a place on the periphery of the opening. In Santo Domingo, the capital of Hispaniola, flocked to the news about everything that happened in the New World.
